Cup, Vase, Bowl
Tokyo-based illustrator Rie Koizumi offers us an intimate domestic scene in Corner Number 2. A five-color screenprint, the work conveys the delicate lines of the artist’s colored pencils through careful isolation and then overlap of the tones used to compose the still life: An array of vessels—cup, vase, bowl—gathered in a spare corner of the universe, unpopulated except for the hand that is perhaps just ‘off-screen,’ waiting to extend into frame and rearrange the objects as desired. These quotidian scenes, often rendered on warm yellow paper and devoid of human figures, are a throughline in Koizumi’s work, which frequently proposes evidently inhabited spaces for the viewer to imagine the lives and actions of those to whom a room, and its contents, belong.

“Corner Number 2 is part of a series themed around various corners in everyday life. It was inspired by the way my favorite small vases gather in a certain corner of a room.” — RK

Corner Number 2 is a five-color screenprint that utilizes the application of Blue (2195 U), Red (2028 U), Green (3415 U), Black, and White inks as simulations of the artist’s use of colored pencil in her original composition. In order to replicate Rie’s illustrative process—in which a dark pencil is used to provide outline and schematic of the objects and architecture of the still life—the print’s Black ink was applied first.
